The 24-year-old former Roma and River Plate star endured a difficult start to his Spurs career after arriving from Italy in 2013, but this past season has started to show the type of form that persuaded Tottenham bosses to splash out £25.8 million on his signature.

Lamela insists he remains as focused as ever in his bid to help Tottenham achieve their goal of Premier League success.

He told the Daily Mirror: "Ever since I came to Tottenham I've heard that I am supposed to be leaving. It is the same every summer. I do not know why."

He added: "Even when things did not go as planned at the start, I never thought about leaving."

Spurs were serious title challengers last season but were ultimately undone as Leicester stormed to the title while Lamela's side fell away in the dying weeks of the recently completed season to finish third behind the Champions and local rivals Arsenal.

Lamela concluded: "Last year we did very well by finishing third. I feel we can do even better this season."

Tottenham kick off their 2016/17 Premier League campaign away at Everton but first face Inter Milan in their final pre-season fixture on 5 August.
