Ernst Middendorp hits back at referee detractors

Chiefs walked away 2-0 victors over Sundowns at Loftus Stadium on Sunday to stretch their lead at the top of the table to five points.

The tie, however, was not without controversy as Samir Nurkovic’s opening goal was allowed to stand despite a contentious call from the assistant referee.

This left Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane irked both at half-time and after the final whistle as he again accused match officials of favouring Amakhosi, but Middendorp was having none of the conversation as he called for media to lay off the subject.

“Really guys, let’s [think about this], ‘Nah, it’s offside’ – are we talking about a situation where it could probably be a handball and a penalty? What the hell are we doing? Let’s let it go,” said Middendorp.

“Today it’s your advantage; tomorrow it’s your advantage; I’ve seen on Wednesday in a game [Sundowns vs Highlands Park] where I believe there was a very clear situation and it should have been a penalty, but should we discuss each and every action?

“Now you’re telling me, ‘Oh, it was offside’ or whatever. The referee has very clearly indicated it was a goal and that’s it. Holy ghost, I really, I think let’s stop this because some stuff you must see, we address it to the wrong people.

“The referees are administrators and teachers, and if you want to have a better – what are you talking about, professionalism? Address it to the PSL; address it to SAFA and don’t follow these guys who do their best.

“And I will just repeat it again and again, whether you like it or not.”
