Former Mamelodi Sundowns captain Thabo Nthethe working his way back to the pitch

Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Bloemfontein Celtic captain Thabo Nthethe has not played competitive football in 2019, but has given an update on the progress of an injury which scuppered his move to Baroka FC in January.

Nthethe’s move to Bakgaga fell through after he picked up a groin. He had spent the first half of the 2018/19 season with Chippa United, before parting ways with the club after just six months.

Nthethe says he is getting much better and will start looking for a club when he has fully recovered.

“I was supposed to do an operation, but I decided not to do it and I did rebah instead. So I’ve been training on my own, trying to get a team. But I feel much better now,” Nthethe tells

“Yes, I’ll wait [to completely heal], rather than for a team to say I should come and then I say to them ‘wait a bit’. So I have not spoken to anyone. I want to be right first, but I’ve been looking at possibilities where I can go."

Asked how long he thinks it would take to get back to full fitness, Nthethe said: “I think a month from now. You know when you train alone is different compared to when you train with a team. But the groin is way much better.”
