Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Hlompho Kekana has opened up on his recent Bafana Bafana omissions and how he feels about his international future.

Kekana, 34, is currently in his 15th year as a professional since making his debut at Black Leopards back in 2004 and is showing no signs of stopping or slowing for that matter.

The Sundowns skipper continues to be an ever-present at his club side, having started and completed 100 percent of their domestic fixtures this season, but has seen his place in the Bafana squad lost to the younger midfielders in both of their recent camps.

But he is not phased at the recent developments since the promotion of Molefi Ntseki in August, having missed out on the current and previous camp in September, as the coach has explained where he stands in terms of the national team.

“I had a chat with the coach and he felt there’s an opportunity for everybody to be selected, and he looked at the matches I’ve played since last season, which was not normal for anyone in the PSL, so I think he’s just trying to manage me because I’m no longer 21,” said Kekana.

“It’s important really to have this break now and again. I’d love to be in the squad [for next month’s 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers], it’s always nice to be in Bafana because that’s the feeling I wanted to have since I was a kid in the village of Zebediela – to play for Bafana Bafana one day.

“So, every time I get called up it’s a party in the Kekana family, and it’s always nice to be in the camp.”

Asked whether he has considered calling time on his international career, as many players often do in their mid-30s, the evergreen Kekana declared: “Well, I feel 25, so it’s for my legs to really tell the mind that, ‘I cannot really lift you anymore.’ So, once my legs communicate with my mind, that’s when I will let you know.”
