Individual accolade pleases Kaizer Chiefs' George Lebese

Lebese picked up the Absa Premiership Goal of the Month award after his winning goal against Ajax Cape Town was voted the top goal for October last year, as he rounded goalkeeper Brandon Peterson to slot home after a great break-away.

The 28-year-old graciously accepted his prize upon thanking those who voted for him, before also giving insight as to why he has made just 13 starts out of a possible 25 so far this season.

“For me, personally, to get this award just shows what the supporters think of individual players and I’m very grateful to everyone who voted for me,” said Lebese.

“Obviously more has been expected from me, which wasn’t what I would have liked to do this season. I haven’t played a lot but I’m working hard.

“Unfortunately I have to stick to my job, which is to play, I can’t coach and play, you know. So when given an opportunity, I think I’ll grab it with both hands.”

With the international break having come to a close, focus will now turn to what is arguably the biggest fixture on the PSL calendar this weekend, when Chiefs host Mamelodi Sundowns at the FNB Stadium on Saturday evening (20h15).

Lebese admits it will be a tough test against Africa’s best team for 2016, but is confident of their readiness following the return of their Bafana Bafana contingent.

“It’s going to be a tough one, we’ll be playing against the African champions, of course, so they’ll deserve the respect,” he added.

“We were fortunate enough to get to watch Percy [Tau] during the national team break, we know what he can do, so we’re preparing well. The other guys came back today and we’re working hard.

“Unfortunately [the Bafana players] couldn’t train today but tomorrow we’ll be a full squad and then we’ll be ready to go."
