Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp has provided a provisional update on the status of his squad ahead of the Soweto Derby, with specifics shared on Kearyn Baccus.

Baccus has been a notable absentee from Chiefs’ last three fixtures after picking up an injury in their Telkom Knockout Last 16 clash away to Cape Town City last month.

The 28-year-old made a promising impression with a solid start to his first season at Naturena, with supporters in particular taking a strong liking to his game.

He missed two big fixtures against Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates last week, and Middendorp had been hopeful of a return in this weekend’s re-match with their Soweto rivals.

However, the German has since hinted that the former Australia junior international may not get the greenlight in time, as he also provided an update on the rest of his squad following their victory away to Chippa United on Wednesday evening.

“From now, the information I received just coming back from Port Elizabeth – and you know a number of players stayed behind because of the load of Tuesday going into Wednesday.

“Just now during the training session, of course some question marks are still there because of the number of players who had been in Port Elizabeth with us playing.

“But as it looks, the information I received is that everybody is available; everybody has to go through a training session [Thursday] afternoon and in a few hours I’ll know a little bit more in terms of specifics.

“The biggest question mark, no doubt, is on the shoulder of Kearyn Baccus. Realistically, I would say he’s probably not available in this moment but more details I can tell you after the session.”
