Orlando Pirates defender Innocent Maela says he would savour the moment he lifts his first trophy with the club he grew up through.
Maela is only a few steps away from possibly lifting the Absa Premiership title with Pirates, as they currently boast a six-point lead over defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns, who will play one of their three games in hand this evening.
Having returned to the club at the beginning of last season following several loan spells away, the 25-year-old has come full circle as he also now holds a place in the Bafana Bafana setup.
While he may be edging closer to the reality of lifting his first trophy for the Buccaneers as well as a first taste of a major international tournament with Bafana, ‘Inno’ has insisted he would savour either experience in isolation.
“It’s always special to play for the national team regardless [of what happens at your club], and it’s always special to win [trophies] for your club,” said Maela.
“And winning for Orlando Pirates, taking into consideration that I was here during my development days in the academy – so for me to be in a position where I can win something for the club, would be out of this world, definitely.”
