Josef Zinnbauer defends Pitso Mosimane's criticism of Fortune Makaringe

Orlando Pirates coach Josef Zinnbauer admitted midfielder Fortune Makaringe’s showboating was “not top” but defended that even Cristiano Ronaldo does such things.

Makaringe immediately came under fire during Pirates’ 1-0 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday evening, with coach Pitso Mosimane seen mocking what he suggested was silly trickery during the second half.

“We score five or six goals; I remember last time winning 16-1 or something [on aggregate against Cote d’Or in the CAF Champions League] – it was a record,” said Mosimane after the match.

“Kasi flavour… Maimane Phiri’s games in Soweto there? They’re good, we love them, and everybody says it’s the identity of the country, neh? Good, so brilliant.

"That was a dangerous move! I said, ‘Hey, we must defend now, when this thing comes. We are in trouble with that move!’

“But, you know what’s good? Fadlu [Davids, Pirates assistant coach] came and apologised, as a top coach. But it’s okay, you’re 1-0 up against Sundowns at Orlando Stadium, give them breathing space.”

When asked for his opinion, Zinnbauer admitted that though such trickery is not necessarily preferred by him, he cannot do much about such things in the moment of a game.

“I didn’t see this [the opposition coach mocking Makaringe], sorry. My concentration is only on my team, and I don’t know what the other coach was doing,” said the German tactician.

“I saw my player, but maybe you heard the supporters [cheer]? Maybe [Thembinkosi] Lorch makes the same; maybe a Sundowns player makes the same, I don’t know.

“But, I’m not happy about this when we have an opponent like Sundowns, but it’s the player. I know a player, I think his name is Ronaldo – he plays in Italy, you know him? He makes the same, and the supporters make, ‘Yeaaaah!’

“We cannot do much about this. I cannot say, ‘Hey Fortune, no, please! I’ll change you if you make these things!’ Yes, it’s not top, but it is so and I cannot stop this.”
