Joseph Makhanya says Orlando Pirates' win over Stellenbosch will boost the confidence of the team, and more importantly Thembinkosi Lorch.
On Saturday 'EzikaMagebhula' managed to beat the Absa Premiership newbies 1-0 at Orlando Stadium,to advance to the quarterfinals of the Telkom Knockout.
"I think it's a step towards the right direction because they were playing against a team that was not posing that much of a danger you see," former Buccaneers star Makhanya tells snl24.com/kickoff.
"It was a team that was waiting for breaks so I still need to see them. I still need to see their game against teams that are stronger, teams that will challenge them, then we'll see if there's an improvement especially in defence because the defence was not challenged that much.
"So I'm hoping that maybe this was the confidence-booster they needed as a team because sometimes you have to start somewhere. So we are hoping this was a start of the good things because we saw the supporters, they were cheering them on, and hoping it's a step towards the right direction because a lot was expected this season.
"So the season is not over, they've still got time to redeem themselves because we are in game number seven and there's still cups, Telkom and Nedbank and the league. I'm saying it's a confidence-booster and hoping it's a win they needed because you need that one win to turn things around.
"It doesn't matter who you get it against, it can turn their season around. The fact remains that they did get that win they needed, and it was a cup match, and we are hoping they can build on top of it my brother."
Makhanya says he was also impressed with 2018/19 PSL Player of the Season Thembinkosi Lorch's performance, and says the goal he scored on Saturday will bring back his confidence.
"I think it will bring it back because it's something that he also needed as a player you see, because as you saw every time the team had a burden, he was the one supposed to come with that magic. So the pressure was too much and what he achieved last season piled too much pressure on him that in each and every game he has to perform," the former Moroka Swallows midfielder explains.
"So him getting a goal again and the team winning, hopefully it will raise the confidence in the team because this doesn't need him alone my brother. He also needs the other players to perform for things to be easy on his side. So it needs I think the whole team to assist him to find his best. But surely it's a confidence-booster the goal he got, and going forward it will help him.
"A performing Lorch is very important to Orlando Pirates because we all know when he is at his best... there are players who've got a lot of impact in the team, whereby when things don't go well we look up to somebody to perform some magic. So fortunately for him at Pirates he is that person whereby he needs to perform right for the team to win because if ever you get a player like Lorch to perform then it drives on to the guys."
