Kagiso Dikgacoi: PSL's best players lack ambition to move overseas

For a second season in a row the PSL has failed to produce a best player that went on to earn himself an overseas contract the way

The likes of Tefu Mashamaite failed to earn a deal at New York City FC after his best season at Kaizer Chiefs in 2015, Khama Billiat is still in the PSL four years since winning the top award, while Thembinkosi Lorch was reportedly frustrated that Orlando Pirates did not sell him last year.

Asked why he thinks our players are failing to emulate the likes of Thulani Serero and Percy Tau, 'KG' – who spent five years playing against the best in the world in England and also represented Cardiff City – offered his take on the matter.

"I think they can still make it abroad, but the problem is the lack of ambition," the former Golden Arrows and Bafana Bafana star tells snl24.com/kickoff.

"I think they're cool with being in a comfort zone. I think they can play you know, Percy is doing well abroad, Themba [Zwane] is doing well at Sundowns.

"There's a lot of players that I can mention who can make it out there. They just don't believe in themselves that they can make it out there."

Dikgacoi believes earning good money should not be the reason our best players choose to stay at home as they can make even more money playing abroad.

"It depends where you want to go. If you go to France, if you go to England, Spain, you are definitely going to earn more than what you'd be earning in South Africa. I think it's about the comfort, nothing else."

Dikgacoi also admits that on some occasions it might be clubs that deny players opportunities of realising their dreams by demanding high transfer fees from interested clubs.

"Well that is again some of the issues that I've seen in the past few years you know, that a team would ask for a lot of money," he says.

"But negotiations are there, and especially for the sake of our national team the clubs should be reasonable because it will also help our national team if the players are moving abroad.

"These players can definitely make it overseas. I've just mentioned Themba. Look at his qualities, he can play anywhere abroad in my opinion.

"A lot of players have been affected by being homesick I would say or the weather or not knowing people around them. They just need to focus, keep disciplined, keep working hard and you'll eventually get used to the place. It's just about being disciplined and focused."
