Kaizer Chiefs fail to show up for encounter with Cape Town City

Cape Town City waited outside of the FNB Stadium on Saturday evening as Kaizer Chiefs failed to show up for their DStv Premiership fixture.

The Mother City side did show up to the stadium on time for the 18h00 kick-off, but did not gain entry to into the stadium and were forced to wait outside.

The match commissioner was also in attendance with the Citizens, who revealed the players' cards were checked on the team bus.

It has also been indicated to this website that City have left the FNB Stadium, as per the instructions from the match commissioner.

City have since released a statement confirming the game was called off at 18h15.

The club announced that a minimum of 31 club personnel and staff had tested positive for Covid-19 that forced the closure of its Naturena training base.

Citizens media officer Julian Bailey insisted prior to the match that preparations for the much-anticipated encounter were going ahead as usual.

"The league has not told us that there is no game taking place, so we have to go to the stadium," Bailey tells snl24.com/kickoff.

"I'm not sure what will happen, but I know for sure that the match officials are going to the stadium.”
