Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp has hinted at possibly fielding some of the fringe players in the squad when they face Golden Arrows this evening.
Chiefs are set to play their third fixture in the space of just seven days when they host Arrows at FNB Stadium on Tuesday – kick-off is scheduled for 19h30.
Fresh off back-to-back wins against AmaZulu and Baroka, Amakhosi could make it three Absa Premiership wins in a row for the first time in 12 months to open up a six-point lead at the top of the log standings.
However, given the strenuous schedule over the last week, Middendorp has insisted the focus will instead be on assessing his squad depth with some fringe players likely to get an opportunity.
“I’m not thinking about three [wins] in a row at the moment. For us, it’s important really to just go through the squad,” said Middendorp.
“We have a lot of players that haven’t been used, and that is where we have to look into it.
“We’ve been hit [with injuries] at the moment, therefore the priority is not to think about three in a row. The priority is definitely to get a solid group and a structured team to get a chance to win.”
The likes of Itumeleng Khune, Reeve Frosler, George Maluleka and Samir Nurkovic have already been ruled out, while Happy Mashiane and Willard Katsande are likely to get a run after coming off the bench over the weekend.
