The Limpopo Soccer Charity Cup has been billed as an annual pre-season tournament under the banner of F.A.M.E. (Film, Arts, Music & Entertainment).
This year’s inaugural event will take place on Saturday, 6 August at Peter Mokaba Stadium and football fans are promised a lot of razzmatazz, music, dance and exhibition by the organisers of the one-day event.
The idea behind it is to revive the hugely popular Charity Spectacular that used to draw crowds of over 100 000 in years gone by, which has now been replaced by the two-team Carling Black Label Cup.
The first semi-final of the F.A.M.E. Charity Cup will be between home teams Baroka and Leopards, while the second one will see guests Chiefs take on new NFD side Magesi. The draw was conducted yesterday at Meropa Casino in Polokwane.
“Even though Limpopo is a poor and mostly rural province, it has always contributed immensely in sports,” says the the COO of F.A.M.E. Tshifiwe 'Chief' Thidiela.
“Even in the old Charity Cup of the PSL, you would find Limpopo teams participating and contributing. Limpopo as a province has also continued to prove its abundance of talent and passion for sports and in particular soccer, with the promotion of two teams in the same season – Baroka FC to the PSL and Magesi FC to the NFD.”
Thidiela says the event is not just about enjoyment and entertainment but also about raising funds for a good cause.
“The F.A.M.E. Charity Cup is about raising funds for charity organisations and bursaries for students in need of financial support. We aim to educate and train our people so that they can have a better tomorrow,” explained Thidiela.
