Kaizer Chiefs striker Ryan Moon has denied being a one-dimensional player and insists his contract situation is not concerning him at the moment.
Moon has often faced criticism over his style of play as well as his qualities as a striker, since registering his best contribution in his second season at Chiefs.
The 22-year-old forward arrived at the Soweto giants in 2016 but struggled to break into the side in his first season, before eventually staking a claim for a regular berth with four goals in his first five starts under Steve Komphela last season.
However, the younger brother of former Bafana Bafana full-back Bryce Moon has again found the going tough this season, having failed to score in 18 appearances across all competitions.
This has seen him come under hefty criticism, with many having labelled him a ‘one-dimensional player’ given his history of having scored most of his goals with his head.
“With me, if a ball comes anywhere – on the floor or in the air – I’ll put it away. It’s not about having only one strength,” defended Moon.
“It’s good that people think my strength is only in the air, because if it comes on the floor, I’ll be ready to score.
“I know my strengths; I know I can score anywhere, whether the ball comes in the air or on the floor, even if it hits your shoulder, a goal is a goal for a striker. That’s what I need, I need more goals.”
With his contract set to lapse at the end of June, and no word from the club on whether he will remain, the Maritzburg United youth graduate has said he is under no pressure to try and play for his future.
“Not really, I think it wasn’t a really great start to the season, I haven’t been getting a lot of regular game-time, so there’s hasn’t been nice momentum,” he added.
“I think for me now, it’s just to listen to what the coaches want from me as a player, and if we can win the Nedbank Cup without me scoring – the main thing is not about me but the club and the team.
“Obviously I want to score, definitely, but the main thing now is about helping the team and not individuals. We need to put the team first, ahead of all of us.
“I won’t go into too much detail about [contract renewal situation], but I don’t have to be too concerned with that.”
