Decorated PSL defender David Kannemeyer is backing rivals Orlando Pirates to win the race for the final CAF Champions League spot ahead of Kaizer Chiefs.

Pirates visit Richards Bay in a DStv Premiership clash at the King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday, while Chiefs host an in-form Stellenbosch at FNB Stadium.

The two Soweto giants go into the weekend's action tied on 37 points, two points behind SuperSport United in the race to clinch CAF Champions League qualification.

"To be honest, I think Pirates will have an easier time this weekend," Kannemeyer tells KickOff.

"Richards Bay are struggling, it's also a tricky one but at the moment I think Stellies are a bit on a high.

"So Chiefs will have a tough time as Stellies possess a very good young team.

"They are energetic and I think the last three weeks or so they've been doing well, Steve [Barker] is doing well with that young team.

"I think it will be premature of me to say it will be a loss for Chiefs, but I think Stellies will come away with a point. I wouldn't be surprised if they even win.

"From my experience, I don't really think that Chiefs even want to compete in the expensive Champions League.

"I played for Chiefs over many years and we never played Champions League for various reasons such as costs and all that.

"I don't know if things have changed now, that's why I'm telling you from my experience.

"For Pirates, yes Champions League will be a big deal, that's why I'm saying I'm speaking under correction for Chiefs, I don't know."
