The situation that has left veteran defender Mulomowandau Mathoho with just a single appearance this season despite the club struggling at the back has been explained.

Chiefs have been leaking at the back and sit amongst the worst defensive units based on goals conceded which is so unlike the club that traditionally takes pride in keeping it tight.

Such has been the mess that 21 goals conceded makes them the worst amongst those in the top eight and reflects badly compared to Mamelodi Sundowns who have only conceded seven.

Through that they have kept Mathoho rotating between the bench and the stands.

His last proper run was in March last year when he played until half-time against Golden Arrows before being withdrawn after his blunder handed the visitors the goal that won them the match.

"Eric (Mathoho) is a definitely part and parcel (of the team)," insists Zwane of the towering defender who is out of contract in June.

"He played a huge role in the team in the past and even now.

"He is just unfortunate and not only him, but he is one of the players that have been injury prone this season.

"It’s him, Khama (Billiat)… even last week or the week before if not mistakes we were preparing him for the game, and he couldn’t make it because of a tore injury.

"We thought he would be fully recovered last week, and he started jogging when we thought he is ready and again it troubled him and we had to rest him.

"Until up to now he hasn’t recovered fully.

"It is only him but there are five or six senior players that have been in the same situation, which is worrying but we can’t force matters, we will rather wait for the right moment to throw them into the game so that they can add value.

"Unfortunately, at the moment they are not available because of injuries,” says Zwane.
