Orlando Pirates players Mobara, Motupa, Kutumela and Malepe to miss Carling Black Label Champion Cup due to Olympics

The Buccaneers quartet have been named in Owen da Gama’s Under-23 side that will represent the nation in Rio next month, and Carling Black Label have confirmed their unavailability for the pre-season clash against Kaizer Chiefs.

“We would like to congratulate all six players [including Amakhosi’s Itumeleng Khune and Eric Mathoho] on their selection for the South African squad to fly the country’s flag in Brazil,” Carling Black Label general manager Vijay Govindsamy is quoted as saying on the Pirates website.

“It is an honour to represent your country on any occasion but the rich history of the Olympic Games makes the pursuit of a gold medal all the more thrilling.

“We understand that some Pirates fans may be disappointed not to see their heroes in action at the FNB Stadium on 30 July but we at Carling Black Label are fully behind the national side that is heading to South America and see this as a great celebration of these young players’ talent.

“We wish the team everything of the best. We are fully behind their pursuit of the gold medal and look forward to seeing the players back at the Carling Black Label Champion Cup next year.”

The decision to exclude the four Pirates players from the event raises eyebrows considering it has been confirmed that highly popular (and voted for) Chiefs duo Khune and Mathoho will still play in the Black Label Cup before heading out to Brazil to join the Olympic team.

South Africa take on Brazil in the tournament opener just five days after the sponsored pre-season Soweto Derby.

Chiefs: Khune, Moleko, Mathoho, Gordinho, Masilela, Katsande, Maluleka, Ekstein, Twala, Lebese, Parker

Pirates: Mhlongo, Jele, Gcaba, Gyimah, Matlaba, Sarr, Manyisa, Rakhale, Qalinge, Gabuza, Ndoro

Supporters of both sides still have an opportunity to influence the outcome of the day by picking the starting line-up, as well as calling the in-game substitutions. Consumers can do this by purchasing a Carling Black Label beer and dialling *120*664*and entering their unique code found on the underside of the bottle cap, followed by the # sign (with no spaces in between). Voting closes at midnight on Tuesday, 26 July.
