Amakhosi are currently on a five-game winless run in all competitions and have not won a domestic match since their 2-1 Absa Premiership victory over SuperSport United on 20 February. They consequently find themselves, realistically, with nothing more to play for this season other than finishing in a respectable position in the league.
Motaung, who made a rare appearance at a media event at Melrose Arch on Monday, said in recent games the team have conceded silly goals and battled to convert chances in the final third of the pitch.
“I think the problem, when I look at it, is that we have conceded goals that we shouldn’t have conceded, although, the defence hasn’t done badly in terms of number of goals conceded,” admitted Motaung.
“Our biggest challenge at the moment has been in the last third of the park because in the last third we have not been converting our chances… I think we still need to fortify that position [up front] because that’s where I think our weakness lies at the moment.
The former Orlando Pirates attacker insisted that he is not too concerned with the slump The Glamour Boys are currently going through, and that he has no intention of making any technical changes in the near future.
“I’m actually not worried because, I mean, if you look at the trend worldwide no one in his wildest dreams thought that at this time of the season Leicester City would be leading by seven points, and that Man United and Man City would be fighting for fourth position,” added ‘Chincha Guluva’.
“There are no panic buttons; we don’t need to do that [fire our coach] because if we do that it means we don’t know what we’re doing.”
The 71-year-old chairman also conceded that changes do, however, need to be made in playing personnel if they are to change their fortunes in front of goal around next season, but assures it will not be “wholesale”.
“Yes, we’ve got an ageing squad but we also have a few players that we brought in. Obviously we have got to replenish the side and bring more players in next season,” he added.
“It won’t be a wholesale change like we did before [Stuart] Baxter came. If you remember when Baxter came we got about eight new players, but I think we are going to tweak the squad a little bit and make sure we get it right [next season].”
