Kgotso Moleko admits lack of belief in Absa Premiership race

Kaizer Chiefs defender Kgotso Moleko has boldly admitted that some players had lost faith in their chances to still challenge for the Absa Premiership title.

Chiefs have been stuck in seventh position for several weeks of late, while the likes of Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates, Bidvest Wits and others fighting for top position.

Amakhosi have found themselves on a descent in reason seasons, suffering a lengthy trophy drought that had subsequently formed a dark cloud over the club and players.

This has in some way also played on the players’ minds, while supporters have grown increasingly frustrated and impatient, leaving the team under growing pressure in every competition.

But amid their advancing in the Nedbank Cup, Moleko has now conceded that perhaps some players lost sight of their chances in challenging for the Absa Premiership title and focussing instead all their attention on the cup.

“To be honest, us as players, I don’t know if we were aware that we had a chance to win the league,” said Moleko. “I think maybe the coaches were aware more than the players.”

The 29-year-old further stressed that the opportunity now to go on and lift the Nedbank Cup could augur well for their road going forward.

“But I think some of us know how to roll, and this cup game is our last chance to win something so that we can boost our confidence for next season.

“If we can win this cup, it will be much better for some of us. Some of the guys also haven’t won anything, so sometimes, if you can taste something is sweet then you might come back for it.”
