Kwanele Kopo responds to Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Gavin Hunt reports

SuperSport United development coach Kwanele Kopo has opened up on reports linking him with the assistant coach job at Kaizer Chiefs.

According to weekend media reports, the young coach and Amakhosi legend Doctor '16V' Khumalo could be assisting Gavin Hunt at the club next season.

Chiefs are currently searching for a new coach following the sacking of German tactician Ernst Middendorp and his number two Shaun Bartlett last week.

"Hey, I don't know my man, I really don't know, I haven't spoken to Chiefs for now. Ya at this stage I haven't spoken to Chiefs," Kopo tells

Kopo was pressed further on whether it was possible that one of the coaches currently in negotiations with Chiefs might have recommended his name to the club management.

"I don't know, it might be, I don't know. Maybe during discussions... but as for me I haven't, if that story is from Chiefs... but as for me I haven't spoken to anyone from Chiefs," he insists.

"Would I accept an opportunity like this? Arrgh, I think when there's a good opportunity to go and work in the PSL, and also when there's a good opportunity to work at a club of that magnitude, and to work with a coach that has achieved so much, ya I think it will be an opportunity to possibly consider and take up.

"I think Gavin is up there in terms of successful coaches in South Africa you know. And to work with such a coach would possibly be a good progression for me.

"Yes, I've worked in the PSL before as an assistant to Pitso [Mosimane] and Cavin Johnson, and a few months with Stuart [Baxter]. I worked very closely with Gavin when he was at SuperSport.

"Ya but let's see what's up there. But ja, an opportunity to work in the PSL with a top club and a top coach is one that I think any aspiring coach would want to have."

Kopo has been working at SuperSport United for the last 19 years and outside that he is the assistant coach for the national under-23 squad.
