Lebogang Phiri close to new Brondby deal

The South Africa Under-23 star, who will play no part at the Olympic Games after his club refused to release him for duty, much to his annoyance, has been in negotiations with Brondby for months with his current deal set to expire at the end of this season.

He had been strongly linked with a move to Austrian side Rapid Vienna, though that ship appears to have sailed with no further movement on the transfer.

It seems likely then that Phiri will sign a new deal with Brondby to extend what will be a five-year stay with the team by the time his current deal is up.

“I would love to extend my contract here,” he told reporters. “It's a good club for me, and over the years I have managed to establish myself as a real player in the team.

“And right now we play the type of football that suits me best. So if I get the chance to extend my contract, I will be more than willing to do it.

“We're pretty close. Both parties want to win,” he concluded.
