Phiri’s Brondby travel to Scottish Cup holders Hibernian for the first leg of their second round qualifier, but must do so without their midfield lynchpin.

Brondby applied for a visa for Phiri, but say the British authorities were not able to process the application in time.

“We applied for a visa for him after we qualified for the second round of the Europa League qualifier on Thursday with victory over Valur but it was enough time,” Brondby sports director Troels Bech told his club’s website. “We have tried to push for getting a visa, but it is unfortunately not possible.”

Phiri, who is tipped to go with South Africa to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, has been strongly linked with a move away from Brondby in this transfer window, with Austrian side Rapid Vienna having publicly expressed their interest.
