The former Chippa United midfielder walked away with the man of the match award during the Absa Premiership match against Highlands Park in Tembisa on Tuesday.

The Mighty Buccaneers beat the Lions of the North 1-0 courtesy of a controversial strike from Tshegofatso Mabasa.

Mntambo has made three appearances for Pirates this season after being left out of the squad that played in the CAF Champions League earlier this season.

"Congratulations to Figo [Mntambo], he has worked extremely hard to be in the team," said Mokwena.

"His character and personality is one of the things that allows him to put himself at the service of the team. You will see in the dressing room how important his personality is in the change room.

"Apart from that you can see his performance is getting better and better, and as he gets his confidence he becomes the Figo we know.

"We congratulate him but no man is an island. This is a team sport. We spoke about that. For him to play he needs the support of his teammates and everyone.

"Congratulations to the team and technical team because there is a lot of hard work that goes in, a lot of sleepless nights. So congratulations to Figo and his teammates for supporting him and working hard to make sure he gets the man of the match award."

Mntambo could look forward to starting a game for the first time in a Soweto Derby when Pirates take on Kaizer Chiefs in the Telkom Knockout quarterfinals in Durban on Saturday.
