Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane was impressed with the performance of returning star Gaston Sirino in his side’s 3-2 victory over Chippa United on Tuesday.
Sirino, who was recently serving a two-match suspension for a red card he picked up against Maritzburg United last month, contributed with an assist and a goal as Sundowns edged the Chilli Boys, to move level on points with Absa Premiership leaders Orlando Pirates, who face Maritzburg tonight (19h30).
“He did not play very well in the first 15, 20 minutes. He lost balls, but when Gaston is there you know that he is going to deliver a pass and an assist. He gave gave Keke [Hlompho Kekana] the ball to score,” the former Bafana Bafana coach said after the game.
“He is an important player. He is not fresh and we took him out to save him [for the Wydad match]. As much as we want to win, we have to take Mshishi [Themba Zwane] out, take Vila [Sibusiso Vilakazi] out, take Gaston out. They are important players, we need them.“
Sirino has been one of Sundowns’ star performers this season, both domestically and on the continent, and they’ll need him to open up the Wydad Casablanca defence with the defence-splitting passes when they meet in the CAF Champions League first leg semifinal on Friday (21h00).
The South American has seven goals and 13 assists in all competitions.
