There were some skeptics when Maboe left Maritzburg United to join Sundowns at the start of the season, but the player has proved many wrong by becoming a key member of head coach Pitso Mosimane’s team.
The 24-year-old has eight goals and five assists in 22 Absa Premiership matches. He is Sundowns’ top scorer in all competitions and his performances could see him earning a nomination for the biggest individual prize in local football.
He has been asked to play upfront on quite a few occasions by Mosimane and he has managed to get on the scoresheet, showing how versatile he is.
“Yes I would [consider himself as a candidate] I mean I’ve been doing well and it’s not up to me to judge that, but all I can say is that I have been doing well for the team. I’d say I still have a lot to do and a lot more to offer. I still need to be more clinical in front of goals and take the right decisions at the right time. I feel like I’ve done well in my first season here.”
Maboe will have a big role to play when Sundowns host eight-time African champions Al Ahly in the CAF Champions League at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday (15h00).
