Mamelodi Sundowns register crucial victory to go level on points with league leaders Orlando Pirates

Defending Absa Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns came back from a goal down to register a crucial 3-2 victory over Chippa United on Tuesday afternoon.

Pitso Mosimane’s men are now level on points with log leaders Orlando Pirates, but have an inferior goal difference.

The match kicked off earlier than usual due to the fact that Sundowns will be travelling to Morocco tonight for their CAF Champions League semifinal first leg clash against Wydad Casablanca on Friday.

Mark Mayambela’s wonderful effort put the relegation-threatened Chilli Boys in front in the 25th minute, giving themselves hope of getting much needed three points. Former Orlando Pirates and Bloemfontein Celtic midfielder Mayamabela gave the visiting Chilli Boys the lead with a well taken effort, after turning Sundowns midfielder Tiyani Mabunda in the box before he calmly slotted home past Kennedy Mweene with a curling left footed shot.

Not long after Mayambela had given the visitors the lead, Sundowns captain Hlompho Kekana had an opportunity to level matters but his shot sailed harmlessly over the bar.

Kekana, though, did find the back of the net just before the break with a header from a Gaston Sirino free kick. It's a goal the hosts needed before the break to give themselves momentum going into the second stanza.

Sundowns dominated play in the second period, looking to take the lead in front of their fans. Before the hour mark, Sibusiso Vilakazi put Sundowns in front for the first time in the match after left back Tebogo Langerman set him up.

Sirino made it three for the hosts and it looked as though it was wrapped up after he found the back of the net. But Rhulani Manzini pulled one back in the final five minutes of the game after Andile Mbenyane played in a good ball to set him up, making for a nervy finish.

Downs goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene pulled off a brilliant double save in stoppage time to ensure the eight-time PSL champions collect maximum points.

Sundowns wasted a few opportunities that could have seen them winning the game by a bigger and more comfortable margin.
