Mamelodi Sundowns top South Africa's club world rankings list

Sundowns are officially ranked as the best club in South Africa, sitting an astonishing 263 places above their nearest PSL rivals, according to the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS).

The IFFHS released their annual report for the club world rankings for 2019, naming Premier League log leaders, reigning European and World club champions Liverpool as the best team over the past year.

The Brazilians returned to the top 100 following a three year absence since 2016, when they were ranked 84th after bagging the CAF Champions League title and featuring at the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan.

Pitso Mosimane's charges last year ranked at 86th in the world, eighth in Afrca and first in South Africa after claiming the Absa Premiership title, appearing in the CAF Champions League semi-finals and winning the Telkom Knockout cup.

Their nearest South African rivals were 349th-ranked Bidvest Wits, who ended third in the league last season, after whom Orlando Pirates followed closely at 365th in the world.

The rest of the PSL teams all fell outside of the Top 400 in the world and were thus not listed by IFFHS, while the League itself was ranked the 50th best in the world in 2019, behind the likes of Slovenia, Angola and Peru.

The points system used by IFFHS is calculated by wins, draws and losses in the continental competitions as well as the domestic league in which the teams compete.
