Mamelodi Sundowns will play their 50th game of the season when they take on Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca in the CAF Champions League first leg semifinal in Rabat tonight.
Despite playing so many matches in one season, Sundowns have managed to keep themselves in the hunt for two of the biggest prizes on offer for them – the Absa Premiership and CAF Champions League.
They are just four matches away from home being crowned continental kings for a second time in their history and they are just three points behind leaders Orlando Pirates in the domestic league, with three matches to play.
The furthest Sundowns have gone in a domestic cup competition was the MTN8 semifinals, when they were knocked out by eventual champions Cape Town City. They were knocked out in the Telkom Knockout quarterfinals and in the last 32 of the Nedbank Cup.
They were still in the 2018 Champions League group stages when the 2018/19 PSL season got underway. In July, while clubs were still on pre-season which falls under 2018/19, the Brazilians played two group stages matches and another two in August.
Pitso Mosimane’s men have kept going despite the difficult challenge of traveling the continent and coming back home to play rescheduled league fixtures. They’ll be hoping that, after so many of hard work, they can finish the campaign with a trophy to display in their cabinet.
