Cassius Mailula bagged a brace as DStv Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns thrashed Maritzburg United 5-0 at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Tuesday night.

Sundowns dropped Themba Zwane and Gaston Sirino to the bench from the MTN8 loss to Orlando Pirates and started young Cassius Mailula, Haashim Domingo, Mosa Lebusa and Thapelo Morena.

Due to lighting weather conditions, the match was delayed for 55 minutes and Masandawana were the more adventurous following kick-off and camped in and around Maritzburg’s defensive-third.

The Brazilians made their dominant spell count on 25 minutes after Domingo made a late run into the six-yard area and stabbed home a low cross from the right by Morena.

Morena then turned from provider to finisher three minutes later where he latched onto a clever pass in the area and applied a composed top-corner finish.

The Team of Choice restructured their playing personnel thereafter, with Rowan Human coming on for Geninio Palace much to the appreciation of the spectators.

Sundowns bagged a third goal on the brink of halftime when Mailula attacked a low cross from Morena and tapped in an unguarded net and opened his league account too.

With Karim Kimvuidi and Alfred Ndengane thrown in by the host, Masandawana remained dominant and were keen to extend to their advantage.

Maritzburg however began to see a lot of the ball and forward momentum too and could’ve pulled one back after Ismail Njoti’s teasing effort from a tight angle in the box found the side-netting.

The Brazilians bagged a fourth goal though midway through the second half after Domingo latched onto another precision delivery by Morena and tucked into the top-corner.

Sundowns rubbed more salt into the home side’s wound when Mailula showed quick feet in the area to collect Surprise Ralani’s reverse pass and round goalkeeper Anye Derick Fru to slot into an empty net.

Masandawana managed to run down the final minutes with the lead intact and secured the win to extend their lead at the top of the table.
