Mamelodi Sundowns forward Phakamani Mahlambi feels he is getting his confidence back

Mahlambi joined Sundowns from Egyptian giants before the close of the transfer window in August last year, as coach Pitso Mosimane finally got the player he had been wanting to sign for quite some time.

The 21-year-old scored on debut for the defending champions in a 3-3 draw with AmaZulu in September, but struggled a bit after that in front of goal. He only got his second Absa Premiership goal of the campaign in a 1-1 draw with his former side Wits in February, and followed that up with another one in a 3-2 victory over Cape Town City the next game.

The speedy forward, who is currently in camp with the national under-23 team, scored in the 2-1 defeat to Chippa United in the Nedbank Cup in January. He’s played 22 matches in all competitions, scoring four goals.

After Mahlambi scored against Wits, Mosimane said he still has a lot of work to do with the player to ensure he improves. The player is certainly willing to give his all to get regularly game time.

The national under 23s, meanwhile, leave for Luanda on today for their U-23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Angola, to be played on Friday. The second leg will be played at Bidvest Stadium next Tuesday.

The winner of the tie will play either Mozambique or Zimbabwe in the next round of qualifiers.

The AFCON serves as a qualifier for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
