Champions elect Mamelodi Sundowns have been bestowed the honour of being the best-ever generation that has been assembled by the club in their history.
Sundowns have become the first ever team in the PSL era years to win 12 league games in a row and at this pace could wrap up the league with as many as seven games to play.
The Brazilians have collected 46 points from 18 games and with their current form it is projected that they will 76 points collecting another 30 from the 36 points still left to play for.
"If you look at their records and all that they have won then you have to give it to them as the best ever," Tyren Arendse tells KickOff.com.
Arendse – now involved in the development ranks at Cape Town Spurs – was part of the 2007 Sundowns squad coached by Gordon Igesund which won 11 league games in a row on their way to the title.
That squad had Calvin Marlin, Vuyo Mere, Mike Manzini, Benson Mhlongo, Oscar Ntwagae, David Kannemeyer, Esrom Nyandoro, Godfrey Sapula, Josta Dladla, Surprise Moriri, Lerato Chabangu, and Jose Torrealba as the regulars who had at least 10 starts in the league.
On the bench sat Peter Ndlovu, Arendse, Brent Carelse, Clement Mazibuko, Brian Baloyi, Mbulelo Mabizela, Dillon Sheppard, Elias Ngwepe, Themba Mnguni, and Neil Winstanley amongst others.
"I know there were other great squads even before our time, but I think with this team they have invested with a plan and are grooming young players in a much better way than it was before.
"What they are doing now and have been doing in the last few years is quite special.
"Then with all the trophies that they have won they are up there as the best Sundowns group of players.
"With so much success you must give it to them as the best-ever in the business.
"Only a special group can be this successful which is why even Gavin Hunt has said that there is no competition for them in the local league and they can only be judged on what they do in the Champions League.
"If people start talking like that then you should know they are doing it better than ever," says Arendse adding that players never know they are playing for records.
"As a player, records are not so important because you are always preparing for the next game.
"The mentality of players plus the coach style plays an important role because it is important for players not to get big headed when you are winning all these games.
"The coach must keep the squad together, humble, and happy through the competition in the team so that they don’t get comfortable.
"To win games is not so difficult when the quality is there just like was the case.
"Once you start winning it becomes a habit," he adds.
Through the last decade, Sundowns have won seven league titles, added the CAF Champions League, CAF Super Cup, Nedbank Cup (thrice), Telkom KnockOut (twice), and the MTN8.
