According to information from CAF on player registrations for the Champions’ League group stages which start this weekend, Zungu is registered on a French passport.
Sundowns get their campaign underway against Al Hilal on Saturday before games against CotonSport and Al Ahly.
Zungu was contracted to French club Amiens for five years (2017-2022) even though he went on loan for a season at Scottish club Rangers in between.
To be eligible for a French passport you must have lived in France for five consecutive years before applying for citizenship – which is evidently what qualified Zungu for this passport.
The French passport falls under the European Union allowing holders the right of free movement in the EU with passports not stamped when entering and leaving the Schengen Area.
A French passport ranks among the top 20 in the world in terms of visa-free travel.
France allows its citizens to have several passports at once to circumvent certain travel restrictions.
As of January 2023, the French passport allows travels to 155 countries visa-free.
Zungu remains eligible for Bafana as he will continue also having his South African ID with dual (or more) citizenship allowed in the country.
