Marks Maponyane warns PSL league title chasers against complacency, sees Bidvest Wits as dark horse

Marks Maponyane has cautioned the expected title contenders against believing there are only two teams in the race, and reveals his dark horse.

With eight rounds of matches played this season and Kaizer Chiefs leading the pack, many have suggested Amakhosi and defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns are the two favourites.

But former Bafana Bafana striker Maponyane has his own predictions about the Absa Premiership title race and does not think the two frontrunners are cut and dried.

"I think Kaizer Chiefs have done well so far, they've started well and it seems like there's this hunger of making fans happy again, but it's still early to talk about the league title," Maponyane tells

"Sundowns have quality in terms of players and the fact that they are playing in Africa. They might seem like they are out of it but their depth gives them a huge advantage against all other teams.

"When you look at Orlando Pirates, you expected a lot after finishing second twice in the last two seasons but they seem to be going down and at this stage it will be a miracle for them to challenge for the league."

Maponyane believes Bidvest Wits might spoil the party because not many are giving them any chance of challenging due to off-field issues.

"I'm hearing people talking about the big three, especially Sundowns and Chiefs, forgetting Bidvest Wits who for me can spoil the party. They've proven in the past and you can never write them off because they are dangerous."
