KickOff revealed on Thursday that Nurkovic is set to complete a sensational move to ambitious DStv Premiership side Royal AM at the end of the current season.
The 29-year-old joined Amakhosi in the 2019/20 season where he scored 13 times in 25 matches for the Soweto giants.
"Chiefs were right to let him go, they were right not to trigger their one-year option," Mayo tells KickOff.
"Personally, I wouldn't say my heart is broken at him leaving. Because we were expecting a lot from him as an international player.
"But unfortunately, he is not giving us what we expected from him, he failed at Chiefs.
"When you are a foreign player, you must be superior to our local players in Mzansi.
"Although Chiefs are struggling upfront, I'm sure his departure is a blessing in disguise.
"Maybe this will give another boy a chance to shine we've never thought could fill his position.
"Though I must admit it will take some time.
"Chiefs are a big club, who can't afford to allow a young attacker to develop and instead need immediate result as a big team.
"They will have to go outside the country to find a striker that will immediately do the job Nurkovic failed to do.
"Because locally, I don't see anyone who can arrive at Chiefs and be a top striker."
