Orlando Pirates will be keeping a keen eye on today’s Absa Premiership meeting between Mamelodi Sundowns and Chippa United.
Though they won’t admit it, Pirates will be banking on Chippa to thwart Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld this afternoon (15h00) as they look to maintain a healthy advantage in the title race.
As things stand, The Buccaneers boast a three-point advantage over the reigning league champions, who are one game adrift in second-place.
Should The Brazilians claim all three points this afternoon, that gap will be reduced to mere goal-difference, depending of course on the margin by which they win.
This will subsequently swing the momentum back in Downs’ favour, as Bucs will again be under pressure to collect points in their remaining games in order to retain their position atop the standings.
However, they will be counting on the likes of former Buccaneers – coach Clinton Larsen, midfielders Thabo Rakhale, Mark Mayambela, Daine Klate and William Twala, as well as loanee Tercious Malepe to do them a favour.
The Soweto giants will travel to face Maritzburg United on Wednesday evening (19h30) to go one game ahead of their Tshwane counterparts, who will be doing CAF Champions' League duty away to Wydad Casablanca on Friday night (20h00).
Sundowns will then return to play their catch-up fixture against Baroka next week Wednesday, as the title race reaches its climax in the remaining two games.
