Former striker Manqoba "Shakes" Ngwenya is tipping Orlando Pirates to be defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns' closest threat this season.

Despite having suffered two upset defeats in the early stages of the season, Sundowns sit atop the DStv Premiership standings.

Two points behind, the Buccaneers occupy second position as they aim to pose a title threat under head coach Jose Riveiro.

"Pirates are scoring goals and doing well by winning games," Ngwenya tells KickOff.

"So it's not going to be easy for Sundowns this season.

"I think Pirates are competing well so far.

"But as far as I'm concerned I think Sundowns will cross the finish line first at the end.

"Pirates will have a good season this season, but as far as being a threat I don't know for sure.

"If they keep up their performances they can pose a threat.

"Sundowns I think they've done well to get the results because they have introduced a lot of new players who are still getting used to their combinations.

"So it still going to take a bit of time until the team gels properly.

"The good things are coming, people should just be patient."
