Soweto giants Orlando Pirates are believed to have sensationally joined the race to sign Argentinean attacker Junior Mendieta from Stellenbosch FC.

Mendieta has enjoyed an impressive campaign with Steve Barker's side that has reportedly sparked interest from fellow Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs.

The 28-year-old joined Stellenbosch in 2020 from Argentinian side Lanus and has gone on to become an integral member at Stellies.

The Argentinian is believed to be in the final year of his contract at Stellenbosch after signing a long-term deal in 2020.

"Pirates are keen," a source within the club informs KickOff.

"They are ready to send one or two players to Stellenbosch as part of the deal.

"Chiefs have always shown an interest. I believe this is Mendieta's last season with Stellenbosch."

Meanwhile, Barker's side are preparing to rope in veteran striker Thamsanqa Gabuza to Cape Town for next season.
