Real Madrid want South African teenager Luther Singh

The Spanish giants want the 18-year-old to join their ‘B’ team, where Brazilian legend Roberto Carlos is assistant coach, but his current club in Sweden, GAIS, will not release him before the end of his contract later this year.

Singh, who has also attracted interest from a top-flight side in Portugal, has been a revelation since moving to Sweden, having been converted from a winger to a central striker.

He has scored seven goals in 15 starts and is the key man in his GAIS team.

The Swedes do not want to release their star man, though with his contract set to expire in four months, he will in all likelihood be on the move soon.

But whether the Madrid club will have retained their interest in the teenager with so many other outstanding young players around the world remains to be seen.

His mentor, Farouk Khan, who developed Singh through the Stars of Africa Academy, has urged his protégé to be patient.

“He is a little bit disheartened at missing out on the opportunity to go to Madrid now, but being 18 gives him the opportunity to be a bit more patient,” Khan tells this website.

“To be honest with you we did not expect him to do so well so soon. Real Madrid’s ‘B’ team would have been a fantastic platform for him to play in. Hopefully they retain their interest, but I have learnt in football that you have to strike while the iron is hot.”

Despite his meteoric rise in Europe, Singh has so far been overlooked by the junior national teams, apart for an appearance for the South African side at the 2014 Durban Under-19 International Football Tournament.
