On Wednesday morning South African football-lovers woke up to the news of the five-time league champion and CAF Champions League winner's decision to leave Chloorkop.
It has also been confirmed that Al Ahly have offered him the position of head coach, with Sundowns president Patrice Motsepe giving the move his blessing but yet to fully address the changes at the club.
Club legend Roger Feutmba believes losing Mosimane will be a huge pain to recover from after the coach's successful spell in transforming the club into a dominant force in Africa.
"It's a huge loss for the club and the PSL," Feutmba tells snl24.com/kickoff.
"I think he was pushed to resign by the Tebogo Langerman saga, which was a very embarrassing mistake for a club like Sundowns, and it would be unfair to blame him."
There have been indications for a while that all might not have been well at Chloorkop, with Mosimane suggesting in recent post-match interviews that there may have been politics in the background despite the team's on-field success.
Feutmba believes people in the Sundowns camp should be held accountable for what has happened, and says the type of negligence displayed in the Langerman saga cannot be tolerated.
"A team like Sundowns can't make such mistakes, because it was not the first time this kind of thing happened," he says.
"Firstly it was about Wayne Arendse, now Langerman. It shouldn't happen and there are people who should be accountable for such mistakes, as the president Patrice Motsepe stated in the statement. Now losing Coach Pitso it makes it worse."
