Samir Nurkovic to sign new and improved Kaizer Chiefs contract

Nurkovic is yet to play for Chiefs this season, despite having been back at full training since last month, due to stalled negotiations over a new contract.

The Serbian had made it clear to the club that he will not play without a new contract after two written offers from Abha FC and Kuwait Sporting Club – which went as high as US$800 000 (R12-million at the current exchange rate) from the initial US$400 000 (R6-million at the current exchange rate) – were turned down.

Chiefs have set their demands in the region of at least US$1-million (R15-million at the current exchange rate) after lowering their initial US$3-million (R45-million at the current exchange rate) asking price for their star attacker.

Authoritative word reaching this website is that Nurkovic has now agreed on a new two-plus-one-year deal, which will vastly improve his earnings from his initial package when he joined at the beginning of last season.

However, his new earnings are still not even half of what he would have earned had he moved to either of his two suitors in the Middle East.

Chiefs’ communications channels have been economic with the truth, firstly denying that there had been offers for the 28-year-old, yet the offers landed in writing at the club.

Secondly, the club then claimed that he is due to return to full training, only for coach Gavin Hunt to confirm that the striker had actually been training for two weeks but couldn’t play due to other problems.

Hunt has been desperate to have Nurkovic back for his misfiring team, which is wallowing in the bottom half of the table, and his statement last week after the draw with Black Leopards sped up the negotiations for this newly agreed deal, which will be sealed tonight.

In the new contract, Chiefs have inserted a transfer figure of US$1-million (R15-million at the current exchange rate), which they will be hoping to get at the end of the season, by which time their transfer ban will be lifted and they will be able to sign a replacement. can also confirm that there were never any written offers from any clubs in Egypt, including Al Ahly, despite all the noise that was made by agents claiming to represent clubs in North Africa.

Nurkovic could start on the bench for the DStv Premiership match against SuperSport United on Tuesday evening (19h30 kick-off).
