Stellenbosch FC midfielder Sibongiseni Mthethwa has been backed to earn another Bafana Bafana call-up after enjoying his first taste of international football last month.

Following an impressive start to the DStv Premiership season with Stellenbosch FC, Mthethwa was handed his maiden call-up to the Bafana Bafana squad last month and featured in back-to-back wins over Sierra Leone and Botswana.

In doing so, the 28-year-old became only the fourth Stellies player to represent the senior South African national team after Athenkosi Mcaba, Jayden Adams and Antonio van Wyk, and he left his club coach in no doubt about his prospects on the international stage.

"Obviously, it's never easy when it is your first call-up. He's had a big step from the NFD to the PSL, and now to Bafana Bafana, but I thought he acquitted himself well," Stellies head coach Steve Barker told the media on Tuesday.

"I think he's the type of player, playing in Africa, he's robust and strong and he doesn't give up. I think he can be a really good asset for Bafana, maybe not starting every game, but if you need someone to come in and shore up the midfield, I think he will be more than capable.

"I'm very proud of what he has done, he's got a lot of growth and learning to do so we have to keep doing that and providing him those opportunities, and hopefully the coach (Hugo Broos) can continue to give him those chances."
