Steve Komphela calm amid Kaizer Chiefs' title bid

Unbeaten in the last 13 games – 11 of which have been in the league – Komphela knows all too well that not only does he need to maintain that run of form, he needs to convert the draws into wins.

Three adrift of leaders Cape Town City and two points behind second-placed Bidvest Wits who have played two games less, the anxiety levels are rising for Amakhosi who already know that any dropping of points will definitely start subtracting them from the title equation.

Based on these numbers there is no doubting that dropping points at any stage over the remainder of the season will do damage to Amakhosi’s title intentions, yet Komphela is not letting emotions get the better of him or his men.

“You don’t have to be too emotional when dealing with athletes because the minute they bring in emotions, they fail to think properly and they cannot apply themselves,” says Komphela.

“The minute they bring emotions they start to get anxious and if you are anxious you are not yourself and that affects how you perform. So what we are saying is that let us be clear about this, this is the reality. Let us look at the table, the number of points, possibilities and what do we need to achieve. All those you point out and then you say at the back of that how then do we have to overcome this and you look at your own structure and how you play the game, that we have to play a game that is almost perfect, a near perfect game to come through.

"So you try not to be emotional.”

Komphela then revealed why he has not shown much emotion when watching his side score in recent games.

“Have you realised that even after scoring, personally I hardly celebrate because nothing has been achieved,” he explained. “Maybe I don’t celebrate a lot because I have been through a lot of setbacks. I believe that the minute you start celebrating, then that is the end. So we are humble enough, we are marching on and respect all opponents while taking one match at a time.”

Next for Komphela and his charges is a clash against Chippa United at FNB Stadium, with kick-off set for 18h00 this evening.
