As it stands, of the nine trophies Komphela has had the chance of winning since the beginning of last season, only the 2016/17 Absa Premiership title remains up for grabs this term.
However, reality is that for Chiefs to clinch the league crown they will have to win all of their five remaining games and hope for a concoction of favourable results involving all of the other title chasers - mathematically possible, but realistically unlikely.
Never before has any Chiefs coach lasted two years in charge without at least scrapping one piece of silverware for AmaKhosi, who are now facing the prospect of a seventh barren season out of the 21 years that the PSL has lived.
If the league title doesn’t end up at Naturena, as is expected, then this will be the fourth season in the last six that AmaKhosi will have closed off a campaign without winning anything – a particularly unsatisfactory record for a club that had only failed to win silverware in just three seasons in the 15 years prior.
Only Stuart Baxter has won a trophy at Chiefs in the last six years.
Only two other coaches appointed on a substantive [Baxter, 2013-14 and Muhsin Ertugral 2000-01] have been at Chiefs for a full season and failed to win anything but they either had already won trophies in their previous seasons or would go on to do so in the next.
Ertugral started and ended the 2000/01 domestic season without landing any trophies but was made progress in the African Cup Winners Cup, which he went on to win halfway through the next season.
Baxter’s barren season was sandwiched between two successful campaigns in which he won the league twice and added another two trophies.
In the other three unproductive years for Chiefs there was a change in personnel in the man trusted to lead the dressing room.
The first year without a trophy was the inaugural PSL season in 1996/97, which was supervised by the late Walter da Silva and Wellington Manyathi.
Then came Ertugral’s barren full season in charge [2000/01].
In the aftermath of the successful ‘Operation Vat Alles’, Chiefs had to endure a trophyless 2002/03 term, which had Ertugral in charge for the first three months before Doctor Khumalo and Donald Khuse oversaw the rest of the campaign.
Recently [2011/12] AmaKhosi were shouting obscenities in a season that started with Vladimir Vermezovic in charge before Khumalo and Khuse were again left to complete the last six weeks of the campaign.
The best that Komphela has offered to date has been reaching two cup finals last season – both of which he lost.
This period has also already doubled up as their longest wait to win another trophy, with the last piece of silverware that they won being the league title on May 5, 2015.
Chiefs have never had to wait two years to win a trophy in the PSL era.
