Stuart Baxter open to Njabulo Ngcobo positional shift

Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter has admitted that he is open to trying out a positional change for reigning PSL Defender of the Season, Njabulo Ngcobo.

Ngcobo joined Chiefs at the start of the season from Swallows FC on the back of a remarkable domestic campaign which culminated in the 27-year-old being named 2020/21 PSL Defender of the Season and earning a call-up to the South Africa squad.

After helping Bafana Bafana win the 2021 COSAFA Cup, he then featured for the national team during the recent 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier win over Ghana when he entered the field of play as a midfield substitution during the second half of the match.

A centre-back by trade, Ngcobo's brief cameo in the more unfamiliar midfield role came as a surprise to many across the country but Baxter believes he possesses all of the requisite tools to be successful in the centre of the park.

"Ngcobo as a midfield player, certainly [we would consider it]," Baxter said ahead of the weekend's clash against Mamelodi Sundowns.

"He's comfortable enough on the ball to play there and certainly, if we were to play a certain way, it would be an absolute possibility that he could play as a midfield player."

The former Richards Bay defender is yet to make his Amakhosi debut and was an unused substitute in all three of the club's opening matches, as well as during the pre-season Carling Black Label Cup clash against Orlando Pirates.
