Sundowns record still stands

The Brazilians still hold the record for the longest winning run of 11 consecutive League victories in a season, which was achieved in 2006/07 under the guidance of Gordon Igesund.

Chiefs had won eight League matches in a row before facing Swallows, and were three away from equalling Sundowns’ record before the 1-1 draw at FNB Stadium.

Chiefs also came close to breaking this record last season with nine straight League wins, but drew 2-2 with Maritzburg United on February 11 this year to miss out.

Sundowns, who won 10 League matches in a row last season, went on to win the League title.

For the sake of clarity, Sundowns’ record for the 11 wins in a row is specifically for League games, and there are other records that have been stated below with Chiefs and Sundowns sharing the four records.

Longest Winning Run in a Single Season (League only): ?11 matches – Mamelodi Sundowns, 2006/07

Longest Winning Run in a Single Season (All competitions): ?13 matches – Kaizer Chiefs, 2014/15

Longest Unbeaten Run (All competitions, including CAF): 19 matches – Mamelodi Sundowns, 2006/07

Longest Domestic Winning Run (Local only): ?15 matches – Kaizer Chiefs (2014/15, including two matches from the end of last season). Sundowns previously held this record with 14 consecutive wins achieved in one season, 2006/07.
