Thabo Matlaba backs Swallows to challenge for DStv Premiership title

After securing promotion to the top-flight by winning the inaugural 2019/20 GladAfrica Championship title, Swallows have bolstered their squad with a number of experienced players.

And as they prepare for their first top-flight appearance against Stellenbosch today (15h30), the former Orlando Pirates full-back says by finishing first in the NFD last season Swallows have already shown they know how to win a league title.

"Ya it's possible, it's possible, it's all about belief and working hard," Matlaba tells KickOff.com.

"So I think Swallows can win the League. Because if they know how to win a promotion, they can also win this one. We can win the league, we have a good squad, we can challenge. We are having a good coach that is having a plan. We are not going there to protect the status. We are going for the league."

When asked how his move to the club happened, Matlaba said he received calls immediately after the news of him having parted ways with Black Leopards was broken by KickOff.com

"I received calls immediately after announcing that I have left Black Leopards. So I decided to go to Swallows. So out of respect for the other teams I won't be able to mention them," he says.

"I love Swallows, it's a big team you see. Swallows have good players like Musa Nyatama, Vuyo Mere, Lebohang Mokoena, so those people are motivating me to go there. Me and Musa talk a lot."

Matlaba also disagrees with those that believe signing too many older players might cost Swallows this season.

"Swallows is doing a great thing. Swallows were in the NFD and now they are in the PSL, so they need to beef up their squad with experienced players," he reasons.

"I know people are saying they are signing more experienced players. But they don't say 'experience' they are saying 'old people'. That's how they put it many people. What I can say is, I believe we will achieve a lot. We are going to work there."
