Former Orlando Pirates captain Thabo Mngomeni says seeing Mamelodi Sundowns pip Kaizer Chiefs to the Absa Premiership title made him happy as it worked in the favour of the local coaches.

Pitso Mosimane picked up his fifth league title after his charges overtook Ernst Middendorp's side on the last day of the 2019/20 season in the bio-bubble.

"Hey, you know I have a problem with them [foreign coaches] and I won't like them to succeed. The moment they succeed it means us, we won't be recognised.," Mngomeni tells snl24.com/kickoff.

"That is why I was so happy when the league was won by Pitso, and not by Chiefs. If it was won by Chiefs it would have been bad news for us black coaches from here. Now it shows we are here.

"We must praise Pitso. Us South Africans we are supposed to praise Pitso because he is passing the message that we need to be trusted, we know this thing and this is our country of birth. We were born with this thing.

"Sundowns' win is raising the trust in us. Please make sure you publish that part in bold letters my brother. Because we have been ignored for many years, and ever since we have been ignored our football standard just dropped and dropped and dropped, because of this confusion of different ideologies."

Mngomeni says he supports the appointment of Gavin Hunt as Amakhosi's new head coach because he is a South African.

"Aah those white South Africans, we should support them my brother because at least they now understand the South African way, unlike before," he says.

"Before they were stereotyped, now they mix their style of play. But most of all my brother, just pass on the message that... you see, people who are destroying us are the owners of the teams.

"Ja, if the owners can get rid of the mentality that a paper from oorkant is the only thing that is going to work here at home... they should trust us the same way they used to cheer us in our playing days. And we are willing to do a better job."
