Ezenkosi started their preparations for the GladAfrica Championship season by adding players mostly from their development side.
Cosmos have made a mediocre start to the campaign and find themselves in 11th place with six points from six matches.
"No, no, from PSL, no!" Sono insists to snl24.com/kickoff when asked why he has not signed many players from Absa Premiership clubs.
"You know to sign a player from the PSL sometimes it becomes a problem. You find that the person has already reached the ceiling and there's nothing else he can add," Sono explains.
"In the NFD you still want to go somewhere, you have not reached the ceiling yet. No I have promoted because what's the use of having an academy when you don't want to promote them? We've promoted five or six from the academy. Why have the academy when you are not going to use it?
"Not while still in the NFD, no. I won't sign a PSL player. Maybe when I win promotion to the PSL but not in the NFD. Even there you need to check your budget first, a PSL player is expensive."
Sono believes his team can compete much better this season than they did last year.
"We are not bad you know this season. You remember last season we put together a team quick, quick, quick because many had left. We made a lot of mistakes, we signed wrong players, we signed right players because we were under pressure you know. But this season we took our own time, we let go of a few players. I think we released nine or ten."
Asked if he was gunning for the league title or to gain automatic promotion, the former Bafana Bafana coach was clear.
"We are competing this season. No one wins the league, we are competing. Whoever says he will win the league it's fine, it's his business. Us we are competing. In my own opinion Uthongathi, [Royal] Eagles, Ajax [Cape Town], Mbombela [United] and Tshakhuma [Tsha Madzhivhandila FC] and maybe Richard's Bay... Us we will just compete.
"You see the way these teams I've mentioned have signed players, they've signed some very, very interesting players. You can just count us in amongst the six, we will try here and there. We just want to compete because if you think too much about the Absa Premiership we won't play. In this league how you start is important."
