Real Madrid's Mariano Diaz explains number 7 shirt choice despite Raul & Cristiano Ronaldo legacy

Miriano returned to Real in the final week of the transfer window as they actiavted their buy-back clause from Olympique Lyon.

The one-time capped Domincan Republic striker looked set to join Sevilla but he admits the return to Los Blancos was hard to refuse.

Upon his arrival, his unveiling shocked many with the decision to opt for the iconic number seven shirt, but the 25-year-old is personally relishing the challenge it brings.

"Yes, it weighs a lot," he told El Partidazo Cope."It was free, it's a number I like and it's a personal challenge.

"I am happy to be able to use a number used by Amancio, Juanito, Butragueno, Raul and Cristiano Ronaldo, of course.

"Many told me I should not choose it, but I'm not thinking about it. I want to work hard to enjoy minutes."

Mariano netted five goals in 14 appearances in his first stint at the club before scoring 21 goals in all competitions with Les Gones during the 2017/18 season.
