Roberts clinches Ajax deal

The arrival of Roberts at the Urban Warriors could signal the retirement of Hans Vonk, or possibly the departure of Morgan Cathey.

Roberts will complete his second season with the Students where he has played fewer than five games during his time there since arriving from Mamelodi Sundowns where he didn’t even play.

Ryan Hartslief, Roberts’ manager revealed to snl24.com/kickoff that the 24-year-old keeper will be moving to the coast in the new season.

“We have clinched a straight four-year deal for Sean. The offer was just too good to resist. Ajax believes in him and wanted to protect their interests by tying him for a longer period. He will leave Wits as a free agent at the end of the season.

“Ajax has always believed in having goalkeepers that will stay for a while with them just like they did with Moeneeb Josephs and Calvin Marlin. Both have gone on to play for the national team,” says Hartslief.

Roberts, who has spent time in England and Singapore before returning home in January 2005, is naturally ecstatic about his pending move.

“It is a great opportunity for me to have managed to get a move to a club like Ajax,” he says.

“With a four-year deal it means it gives me the foundation to settle and also improve my game rather than a short deal just like the one I had with Wits this season. My first target at Ajax is to play regularly and at least attract the attention of national selectors. I really want to enjoy my game again and not spend a lot of time on the bench,” says Roberts, who has spent two years at Wits as cover for Josephs.
